An Afternoon with Ray Charles…

Business…this week’s column entry is on Mos Def’s new joint, and a bizarre conclusion I gleaned from it. Enjoy.

Went to see Ray this afternoon. Hmmmph…not sure how I feel about this. Read along as I try to figure this out.

Is Tom Yawkey Singin’ or Spinnin’ in His Grave?

Business…last week’s column entry was on the Jigga/Kelly tour, and here’s a joint on the BSN celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Rumble in the Jungle. Also, my man Mark Anthony Neal serves up a big-league fastball this week in his column on AOL. Long time coming, ha, MAN?

It’s the middle of the night, and I woke up to find out the Red Sox are now World Series champions. That’s cool, I suppose. But it’s moments like this one that I wish Wiley was still around.

Shout out to the G.O.A.T.!

Real fast, someone blow the dust of Hotter Than July and sing Happy Birthday to Frederick J. Batiste, frequent commenter on these comments pages, and also one of my best friends and esteemed colleagues (and those last two points stand independent of one another). In celebration, I invite you to check this piece he recently did on the ten best members of the HBCU diaspora currently playing in the NFL. Fred did not attend the Shameless School of Self-Promotion with me, so I’ll pass on much of what being shameless taught me and give him some pub right here.

Full update coming later this week.

Bonding over hatred

Just got back in from watching the Red Sox-Yankees game. I sat in a bar with cats from the department watching the Sox mollywop the Yankees, and it felt good. It was a moment that brought people of divergent backgrounds together in one place, sharing something so strong that it can never be broken.

That something is a severe distaste for the New York Yankees. God bless hatred…it’s the scotch tape that holds this tattered world together.

All About the Music

*Today’s post is written while I hang with John Underwood. Recklessness is likely to ensue…*

Big update. First, peep this joint on Michael Vick at the Black Sports Network. Next, this week’s joint in the column is on the fantastic documentary series VH1 has done on hip hop. Last week, the column met some technical difficulties, but I’ll be there every Friday. AOL users can reach Black Voices by typing Keyword: BV. If you can’t already, you will soon be able to set BV as your Welcome screen, so be on the lookout for that option. Shouts to KG, Tanu, and GD and the squad for getting that new venture off the ground.

Moving along, it seems Ray Benzino is at it again…

More on the election…

Yep, I said Kerry didn’t have to do much to get my vote. Well, it seems he’s done less than I thought he had. The following is a collection of quotes he’s made since 1990 about Iraq, and it’s worth reading, to say the least.

Why I’m Not Watching the Debates…

As I type this, Kerry and Bush are debating. Actually, I can’t say that definitively because I don’t know what time this debate is starting. I missed the Vice Presidential debate on Wednesday, too. I’ll probably miss the next one. Is there one after that? I neither know nor care.

I do stay up on this election through the papers, but I can’t make myself watch a single debate.

Why? Because it doesn’t matter a lick. Unless Kerry says something to the effect of “thirteen is an unlucky number, so I’m repealing that amendment,” the debate will not change who I vote for at all.

So, outside of laughing at Bush bungle, watching the debates is a waste of my time.

Titles are becoming difficult to come up with…

Business…the last column entry was on the potential Fugees reunion. If you’ve having trouble keeping up with the column, check the last post (which did not have a notification, so those on the list may have missed it).

***

Saturday’s a national holiday…at least in the nation that is Texas. And as a reluctant but indoctrinated naturalized citizen of the Lone Star, there’s no place I’ll be on Saturday that doesn’t have a television showing Texas/Oklahoma.

Lucky I love my mama…otherwise, this game would break up my family.

Quick Business Update

Yo, hate to do this, but just in case you’ve been looking for the column on Africana, things have changed a little bit. As many of you know, Africana was bought by AOL in 2001. Well, its content is being folded into Black Voices. While that’s great for exposure and all that fun stuff, it’s a bit more difficult to go directly to my offering of madness. So, if you click the link to the right on “For Myself and Others,” it’ll take you to the first four entries. To see the new new, click the link that says “AOL Black Voices,” and that will take you to the BV music page, and the column won’t be hard to get to from there. It goes up on Fridays now, though the time of the update will change from week to week. Per usual, I’ll put a link to the newest entry in the most immediate post.

That’s right, shameless self-promotion at its finest. Later in the week, I’ll bring you snippets from the end of the acquisition of Bomaniland, which must have been secretly sponsored by Murphy and his iron-clad law.

Also, if you’re at home on Tuesday, check your local listings and peep The Larry Elder Show. Now, I’m not a fan of Elder, but jimi izrael will be appearing. I almost wanna put a TV in my classroom just to watch it like they used to do for space shuttle liftoffs.

Let’s just hope this ain’t like the Challenger.
