Ladies and Gentlemen, Raymond Felton!!!

Felt Pac

Which UNC Basketball Player Are You?
brought to you by Quizilla

(Somehow, they originally thought that I was Jackie Manuel, but that couldn’t be right, given that my shots hit the rim. So, after re-evaluating what kind of guy I am, I became Felton, who I should be)

Business…this week’s, the column’s on an evening with Grandmaster Flash. Should make your heart a bit fuzzy if you really love rap music.

I’m getting some things done to prepare to attend my grandmother’s funeral next week, so I’ll probably be back on the update around Wednesday or so. But first, here’s an update on the Dutch Masters…

Adventures in Rec League Coaching

Here’s the first, “damn, I feel old” moment of 2005.

Being Aden Darity’s media assassin means handling some other tasks, like being his assistant coach for a rec league basketball team. Now, the kids are really cool, but they’re not quite that good. It’s okay, though. When kids are 16 or 17 and sign up to play rec league ball, they’re doing so because they really just want to play. That’s to be commended. Plus, even at rec league, they get girls to come and watch them. No small feat.

But Aden and I showed up late to this game, probably two minutes into the game. As Aden got to the bench, one of the scorekeepers tapped him, pulled him close, and then said…

“Some of the kids on your team are high, especially #24.”

Melanin is good…

Shouts out to Conrad Miller, who has contributed the following piece on the benefits of melanin. Conrad’s a senior in high school in Claremont, CA, and he would be one of the baddest writers you ever met if he didn’t want to sell his soul and work with math his whole life. But, I was on that kick back in ‘97, so he may come around just fine.

Really, he’s written things at seventeen that I wish I could write today. Check that piece out, and you can hit him up with praise at conradm at gmail dot com. Also, feel free to offer your benefits of melanin on the comments board. And if you’re like me and think he should do more with words, let him know. This requires that you have Adobe Acrobat.

And to other writers without a major outlet, feel free to send me a link and I’ll put it up here if it’s that heat. School paper, your boy’s website, I don’t care. I got a feeling these good readers like good writing, no matter where it came from.

Winter Wonderland? Keep that.

Business…this week, the column is on the Geto Boys. With two straight entries having something to do with Houston, you’d think I actually liked the city. Don’t sleep…ain’t nothin changed.

Playlist coming…

To the curl…

Business…this month’s joint for the BSN is on Pedro Martinez’ Jheri Curl. Yes, you read that right…nearly 1,000 words on a Jheri Curl. Thanks to DC for giving the folk a lil somethin called creative control.

And tonight I went and saw Angela Davis speak. Every year, I try to do something productive on the King Holiday, and this was what I did for the 0-cinco. The talk wasn’t bad, but I’m starting to get more out of hearing conservatives speak.

More on King…

Just in case you wonder why this holiday remains important, click here. Thoughts?

Also, here’s a great interview King did with Alex Haley for Playboy. There really are good articles in Playboy.

In remembrance…

Here’s a Happy MLK Day from me to you. Here’s something I did on the holiday four years ago. It was somewhat specific to that year and I wrote this when I wasn’t too good at this writing thing, but please give it a look. And if your boss ain’t give you the day off, call reading this your little bit of revolution for the day.

Bush Gets Hustled by Well-Known Coon

Dick Prince has a synopsis of Armstrong Williams’ transgression, and he also provides a pretty wide survey of the slams Williams has received.

Yes, Armstrong is a clown. Anyone who doesn’t see that off-top is a fool. But on this one, I think he’s more of a clownish fox than just a clown.

Think about it…

What were you thinking, D?

Business…”For Myself and Others” is about the likelihood that Houston hip hop will blow up this year. And I know dealing with Typekey has been hell for many of you, but nearly all the kinks have been worked out. Comments are the best part of this site to me, so thanks for the patience while we got it right. Big shouts to George and Honey for their assistance.

Now, give this link a look.

All together…”What were you thinking, D?”

What would you do for Beyonce?

As most of you know, my mind is scattershot as all get out. Sometimes, it’s scattershot like buckshot. Others, it’s like fifteen eight-year olds throwing whiffle balls. Throw this one in the latter category.

But really, fellas, what would you do for Beyonce? Ladies, throw in some analogous male and participate in this, also.
