Let’s Keep This Rollin’…
Business…here’s a look at the travails of trying to follow Pac-10 hoops.
Name your favorites from the following categories re: Coming To America. Mine are in parentheses.
Favorite Eddie Murphy Character (Clarence the Barber, with honorable mention to Jackson Heights’ own Mr. Randy Watson).
Favorite Quote (”I said, ‘Dr. King,’ and he said, ‘oops, I thought you was somebody else.’”)
Favorite Non-Eddie Character (Cleo McDowell, because simply casting John Amos was absolute genius)
Favorite Scene (Samuel L.’s ill-fated robbery attempt)
Most Ridiculous Outfit (anything from Lisa’s sister Patrice, who is not to be confused with Bomani’s brother Patrice)
How Many Times Have You Seen Coming To America? (At least 100. For real.)

I read the article and unfortunately for me I am smack dab in the middle of Pac-10 country. That is all that is on. Being a Georgetown fan (and with games coming on at 4pm PST) I don’t get to see alot of them unless I use my DVR to record them.
I think the team to watch out for in the Pac-10 is Arizona. Budinger is no joke and he is a freshman.

With the exception of the non-Eddie character, all can be summed up in two words.
Sexual Chocolate.

“IN THE FACE!” gets me every time.

How come no one ever fully appreciates the chicken bones in the collection plate?
Comment by Kirk — February 15, 2007 #
Favorite Character: Same as you Bo in the same order
Favorite Quote: The whole Joe Louis’ age argument is one big quote to meet. I say the whole thing and do the voices at the drop of a hat
Favorite Non-Eddie Character: Two many to count but just to be different i’ll say the twins in the nightclub: “My name is Peaches, and I’m the best. All the djs want to feel my breasts.” with the other twin beatboxing in the background.
Favorite Scene (Samuel L.’s ill-fated robbery attempt): this was why voicemail message in college for two months with eddie’s part edited out starting from “Who the fuck is this asshole?” to “Fuck you” pauses where eddie spoke gave enough time for caller to respond before beep right after fuck you.
Most Ridiculous Outfit: randy watson
How Many Times Have You Seen Coming To America?: gotta be pushing 200+

“Man, I thought that was the trash.”
“You ain’t met no Doctor Martin Luther the King.”
“I tied my own shoes once, it is an overrated experience.”
This movie is perfect in every 80s way.
Comment by evan — February 15, 2007 #
Evan, the “Matin Luther the King” line still cracks me up, as well as “Joe Louis was 62 years old when he fought Rocky Marciano.”
I’ve seen the movie too many times to count.

Fav eddie character…you know I gotta be partial to Clarence the barber…but the jewish guy in the barbership is a close second.
Fav non-eddie character…Randy Watson…no question
Fav quote “tall black mutha fucka” after the chicken bone in the collection plate incident.
Favorite scene…whew that’s tough…”She’s your queeeeeen to beeee” The entire song…actually that’s a tie for greatest line as well.
Most rediculous outfit…the one the obese woman was wearing who introduced the “queen to be”.
Seen CTA at least 100 times…own it on DVD and VHS! I’m a fan.
Comment by Clarence — February 15, 2007 #
This crazy because I just copped “Delirious” on DVD yesterday. Get outta my head, Bo.
Comment by Brew City Drew — February 15, 2007 #
Correction… fav non eddie character is the preacher….randy is eddie….I just committed a mortal CTA sin. my bad

“Soon I’ll be on fries; then the grill. And pretty soon, I’ll make assistant manager, and that’s when the big bucks start rolling in…”
And I don’t care that Eriq La Salle went on to be more famous on ER; he’ll always be Darryl Jenks to me.
Moreover, you gotta love the scene when the Jenks family leave Soul Glo jheri curl stains on the couch.
I’m gonna go watch that movie right now for at least 150th time. Clas-sic.
Comment by Ben — February 15, 2007 #
Clarence the Barber wins hands down.
Favorite quotes (today at least considering that I think something different is funny everytime I watch this movie):
“Hey, it’s Kunta Kente!!!”
*hysterical laughter and over the top gyrations follow*

Lisa McDowell’s little sister, Patrice, is BY FAR my favorite character!
Favorite scenes are all the joints from the Barber Shop.
That damn lion’s head on James Earl Jones is the most ridiculous outfit … yet on some NEXT LEVEL pimp stuff. Can you imagine a dude being like, “Nah, nigga! This is LION!”
I would argue that if you average it out, I’ve seen the movie once every three months ever since I’ve been breathing.

In college, an umbrella group for all the organizations for people of color puts on an annual cultural show. The Black Student Movement did a tribute to blacks in film. My LB in full Oha costume sang She’s Your Queen to Be. EVERY black person in that joing sang along! It was one of those classic moments in college that you remember for ever.
When I was little I just thought a fat black man singing that high was funny. But when I learned the LYRICS I almost died! LOL.
She’s your Queen-to-be
A Queen-to-be forever
A Queen who’ll do whatever his highness desires
She’s your Queen-to-be
A vision of perfection
An object of affection to quench your royal fire
Completely free from infection
To be used at your discretion
Waiting only for your direction
Your Queen-to-be

Paul Bates has been in Coming to America and 8 Mile. All that talent, where have we missed him over the years?

Clarence: Hey, what’s up, brother? You a little late for the Christmas pageant.
Comment by Jo — February 15, 2007 #
An underrated classic from Mr. Clarence was when he said he was going to the Miss Black Awareness pageant, where he told Akeem there would be, “good, clean girls.” I wonder if Obama was there, too.
Oh, and I contend the most underrated part of that movie is, “get your royal engagement T-shirts!” Not to get all essentialist on you, but name a single significant event in the modern history of negritude that didn’t have somebody slangin’ shirts? And if it’s a bougie event, African masks for the low low (got four up at my house from Morehouse’s ‘05 Homecoming).
Comment by Bomani — February 15, 2007 #
In fairness, I had to look this quote up to get it down verbatim:
“This the place I was telling you about. It’s real fucked up. Got just one window facing a brick wall. Used to rent it to a blind man… damn shame what they did to that dog.”
Comment by Kirk — February 15, 2007 #
I’ve decided that the only thing to improve CTA would have been Robin Harris.
Comment by evan — February 16, 2007 #
“He helped Joshua fight the battle of Jericho, he helped Daniel get out the lion’s den, he helped Gilligan get off the island. ”
“when I look at these contestants for the Miss Black Awareness Pageant, I feel good I feel good, because I know there’s a God somewhere! There’s a God somewhere! Turn around ladies for me please. You know there’s a God who sits on high and looks down low. Man cannot make it like this! Larry Flynt! Hugh Hefner! They can take the picture, but you can’t make it. Only God above, the Hugh Hefner on high, can make it for ya!
God Bless Reverend Brown!!!!!
Comment by smokedog2138 — February 16, 2007 #
sorry. it’s “he helped Gilll-li-gan get off the ii-sland. Should have typed it right
Comment by smokedog2138 — February 16, 2007 #
smokedog, you followed up with exactly what I was thinking.
Comment by Kirk — February 16, 2007 #
OK… What is up with everyone here? No mention of “The Royal Penis is clean” scene?
Another favorite part was when Eriq LaSalle’s character gives the camera his own “Eddie Murphy” look when Patrice comes to get him out of his wet clothes!
I guess my mind is in the gutter.
Comment by Rex — February 16, 2007 #
Favorite character : Randy Watson
And the line where Randy says : Give it up for Reverend Brown, he has been my reverend since I was a little boy and I love him dearly… then kisses him on the cheek, so hilarious!
Comment by Myro — February 19, 2007 #
I have so many favourite lines… here’s the first one that comes to mind:
“You are not akeem!”
“I know that!”

Arsenio Hall as Woman in the Club… “Im gonna tear you apart…and your friend too” the look on his face was priceless!!
