At the risk of being self-indulgent…

…how did you stumble upon this site?  That was raised in the comments of a different post, and I’m kinda curious.  Most folks that read this, I’ve found, didn’t quite get here from Page 2.  Kinda interesting to find these things out, especially as the voice of the site has changed a bit.

Plus, having a real job doesn’t allow the time to blog that I used to have.  I really miss that.  Rappin’ with y’all has been one of the most fulfilling things to happen to me in a long while.

And business…here’s today’s Jump.  Doing it on Thursday, too.

  2. I was on okayplayer & someone made reference to a post on my friend Wes Jackson’s blog. Went from his blog to another blog, which linked to Danyel Smith’s old blog. She had you on her blogroll. Followed a link from her blog to another, which also had you on the blogroll. Started reading, and kept coming back.

  4. The short answer is Google. I was searching for commentary on the sign of the apocalypse that was Flavor of Love. I started reading Talkin’ Videos blog, since he was near the top of the results. He had a link to your blog. I recoginzed your name from Page 2; so I read your archive. I make a comment on occasion, but I prefer to read other’s comments. Kinda makes me feel like I used to in college when all my friends all lived close by and we would sit around talk shit to each other. Sometimes someone would say something insightful, but mostly we would try to make each other laugh. I suspect most of the commenters/readers come here for the same thing.

  5. It’s funny that you asked this, as I had not even thought of it until now and it was no easy task figuring it out but I came to the very simple answer. I was doing a search on opinions surrounding this year’s NCAA Basketball tournament (MAJOR DUKE FAN)….so imagine my horror!!…lol…;)….nah, found you had a pretty good answer to some pretty good questions and I managed to add my email addy to your site….so here I am, a 27 year old female from Charlotte….;)

  6. Ashley, that was only 3-4 months ago. Is your short term memory that shot?

  7. Learned about the site from your mother. She simply told me about it one day dropped by her office at Alabama A&M University. Hope she is doing well, really enjoyed her Economics class.

  11. I was trying to figure out why exactly ESPN hired Scoop Jackson of all people to fill Ralph Wiley’s shoes and came across a few columns of yours over there.

Then I went over to Google to see what else you’d done, found this site and liked the blog enough to come back every now and then.

I miss R-Dub. Only he could pull off a full-length column calling Tracy McGrady the Kwisatz Haderach and make it a compelling read.

Do you have Google Analytics installed? It can answer some of your questions.

  13. Fan from Page 2 and your appearances on 96 Rock here. Read some of the hate mail you share and have been hooked ever since. Well, that and the comments section is not just people screaming at each other. The fact that the following discussion is an actual discussion is refreshing (and entertaining).

  19. I was fooling around when I should have been working, trying to find out from Google how many references there were to some random-ass ghetto word there were on the ‘net. The word (I don’t remember what it was) came up in one of your blog entries. Came over, laughed myself into a hernia, and never left.

  20. Read your review of Kanye’s College Dropout and agreed with you and have been agreeing (on most things) every since.

  21. I was on an 8-hour layover in the Fresno airport and was online in the terminal passing time. Followed the link to comment to you about a Page 2 article you did on my home girl the Wiester… And then the OU/UT e-mail/blog sparring began shortly after!

  22. Not to chg the subject, but I miss Wiley too. Why black people tend to shout put my feelings on many matters into words more clearly.

  23. your For Myself and Others column at africana.com. if memory serves me correctly, yours (or maybe jimi izrael’s) was the 1st blog i ever read.

  25. Dude, I’ve been lurking so long, I’ve forgotten how I ended up here. Probably Jimi Izrael (or Page 2, sh!t I don’t know!). :)

Speaking of R-Dub, was I so stupid all those years to not realize “Road Dog” was Spike Lee?

    Comment by jaypee — July 11, 2007 #

  26. I always thought R-Dub was a combination of two or three friends and Ralph himself.

If R-Dub is indeed Spike, then I have a whole new level of respect for Mr. Lee. R-Dub and Ralph talked a loooot about basketball.

    Congrats by the way..

  44. as someone said above, i think i got here via africana.com or from jimi izrael via africana. the weird thing is, i don’t even read jimi’s page anymore but i still come here. when i saw that you have houston ties (i’m from missouri city) and you cut for the longhorns (my alma mater), i was sold and have been coming back ever since. i never comment though - just a few times a week, i think, “wonder what bo’s talkin bout.”
