1993 was a long time ago…
It’s a quiet Friday night at the Estate. Flipping through the channels, I saw “Jurassic Park” on TNT.
Got me thinking…will we ever be able to explain to our children just what a big deal “Jurassic Park” was when it hit theaters? Because, watching it, I can barely explain it to myself. It’s good, but was it worth putting on a lunch box?
At the time, it seemed like they must have brought the film to theaters using a fleet of DeLoreans. Now? Not so much.

@Bo : My best friend’s folks took us out of school early that day to see JP on release. Mind you, we were all sci-fi nerds (no Star Trek/Wars for me) and it blew us completely away. Still holds up and people have to recognize that Sam Jackson got caught up like Deep Blue Sea without the irony.

As someone who comes from the CGI world, it was the first of its kind to really push the envelope of the use of CGI. To my knowledge, it was the first really undetectable animation use in film.
As for the movie, it was OK. Since I read the book first, I came from the, “Oh. but the book was better camp.”
I remember specifically the time we saw the movie too. It was a big event for my coworker and me. We went early in the morning to buy the three dozen or so tickets, had and after work pau hana with drinks and puupuus, and then caravanned to the theatre–from principles to interns.

I meant “coworkerS” plural.

I think the answer about whether or not we can explain it to our kids is a simple “no.” It will be similar to our parents trying to explain to us what it was like to see TV for the first time–even if they get the historical magnitude, they won’t get how big the event actually was.

I think also the fact that it was filmed in our backyard had a lot to do with our fanaticism with it out here.
Kind of like LOST.
