Decor by Baba

Well folks, it’s gonna be a hectic week. Tuesday morning, I’m heading to Cali to help Kirk make a cross country move. As you’d expect, spending all day on the highway isn’t conducive to updating. I’ll have pieces on ESPN and BSN this week (ESPN on Tuesday), so please try to check those out.
In the meantime, I’ve just finished fighting the block (again, Baba was victorious). The best part, though, is I’m doing so in my newly, partially decorated living room.

See, this is the new, mature Baba. The previous Baba has been out of his parents’ house since 1997. Since then I have hung exactly ZERO things on the walls at any of my spots. Why? Because that stuff cost money and figuring out what to do would require some thought.
But now that I’m the proprietor of the Palatial Bomaniland Estate (PBE), I feel compelled to put things on the walls. We’ve still got a lot of work to do–and pictures will be coming–but here’s what we’ve got going right now.
Living Room–a bronze (colored) clock, two brown antique Tanzanian masks, and a picture of my mama. Pending are some bookends for the mantle and a plant to put over the mantle and fireplace. The coolest thing is how the stuff’s gonna be lined up. My fireplace is kitty cornered in teh room, and there’s a mantle and large space over the fireplace. On one wall that forms that space, I’ve got the masks. On the other is the clock, and farther along that wall is my mama. On that mantle’s where the bookends will go, and a plant over that. Don’t that just sound classy?
Bedroom–a print from Lorrie. Real cool black and white number. Over the nightstand by my bed is an autographed copy of teh 12″ of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy.” Thanks, Liz. Got a big wall in there that needs attention, though. Ideas are welcome.
Office–an original from Lorrie. Thinking of putting some photos of my folks up in there. Give it a chill, upbeat mood, yanno?
Staircase–Got a couple of ebony masks. Putting one at the bottom of the staircase and one at the top. That way, we also kinda decorate the foyer at the PBE.
Now, only at 5am would I think anyone would care about that sorta stuff. So I ask that you forgive me. But this is really kinda cool to do. It’s putting together a puzzle, except it’s okay if the pieces don’t always fit perfectly. And I’ve managed to do all of this on a reasonable budget. Time to get in on that Martha Stewart money, shawty!
Anyhoo, low cost decorating ideas are welcomed. Encouraged, even.

  1. Paint can change the look of a room in a couple of hours- white walls are so boring anyway…I love vibrant bold colors myself, but I recognize that a bedroom in Electric Lime is not for everybody lol.
Skip the gross wall paper borders and stuff like that, but you sound like you’re on the right track. 😛
Also, a couple of cool sculptures might be nice too.
Only thing with paint–I do have to sell this place at some point.

  2. Well, being that I’ve become attached to the Home and Garden Television channel (I place all the blame on my Auntie, cause at one point I couldn’t stand that channel). Paint is a good and inexpensive way to go. As for having to sell the place in the future. One big old bucket of beige or white will restore it to a more neutral color for selling.
If you are concerned that you will pick a color that looks good on the paint chip and then get home and wish you had known better, they have little sample packets and buckets now. This way you can paint a few blocks of different shades or colors and mull it over for a few days.
Otherwise it sounds like you are doing the best thing, making it look and feel like a place Bomani would live…and that’s what makes it home.

  3. Seeing as how you’re going to be sitting in a car with my dumb ass for near eternity, I’m just gonna shut up and say “good job”. And yeah, that paint idea might not be so good. Sure, you can re-paint later, but it also means you HAVE to re-paint later.

“Got a big wall in there that needs attention, though. Ideas are welcome.”—-I am kind of partial to black/white photo art myself. And you already have a “12 up on the wall anyway [and I might be showing my youth here but a “12 is a vinyl disk right?]. If it was my room it would be photo art of me, but I dont take you for that type of dude so just get some creative pieces or something.

“Anyhoo, low cost decorating ideas are welcomed. Encouraged, even.”–you live in Chapel Hill so im sure it has to be a number of aspiring “photographers” on campus who would sell their work for pretty cheap.

How about a decorative UT throw to put up on the wall..I know how much you love your ‘Horns, mane…
Or get like some movie posters from some ol’ school joints…except the following: BAPS, Booty Call, Soul Plane, Hair Show, Barbershop 2 and Beauty Shop, Kingdom Come/Fighting Temptations, The Cookout, How to Be a Player..and others…
Naw, hell with it, make it a Longhorns, CAU shrine..(I use shrine loosely in reference to CAU football)…
