G-Code, Amare Stoudemire, and Abortion

Don’t worry…Amare didn’t break the G-Code.
Business…September’s BSN column is on The G-Code and here’s a feature I did on Amare Stoudemire for ESPN.
You’re fuckin right I did something on the G-Code.
Anyway, give this a look. Ol’ boy Bill Bennett is at it again. But before you get too irate about that, consider that Steve Levitt furthers this theory, and it’s prominently featured in Freakonomics, which is inexplicably a phenomenon. I do that sort of stuff on the site all the time. No, I ain’t hatin.
Anyway, here’s the problem I have with this. Keeping abortion legal only increases the likelihood that an abortion will be safe and be done without the aid of a wire hanger. Anyhoo, I’d like to see the statistics and see if there were significantly more abortions after Roe v. Wade than before. If not–and I bet the difference is low–this doesn’t hold much water.
And that’s all I have to say about that. Lots of folks have hit me up about those Prince songs. Let me know if there are any you’d like and I’ll, yanno, find a way to help you find them.

  1. Is that really all you have to say about that? I find that difficult to believe that you, a black male (who was once a black baby) can be silenced after two paragraphs.
Anyway, the spirit of Bennett’s argument is old. This statement is further evidence that we, as responsible voters, should hold our political leaders to higher standards. I’m more embarrassed that this male is an education secretary than for his comments. If he wants to present himself as a racist and ignorant white man, that’s his business but can’t we find someone less sensitive to stereotypes (read: less of an asshole and more intelligent) for the position of education secretary? One other thing: I find it difficult to believe that the “white house” criticized him for his comments…
On roughly three hours sleep, be glad the verbs were properly conjugated.

  2. I dig Amare. Mostly because you can SEE the growth in his game. Every year he gets a bit better, one more facet grows, one more weakness gets diminshed. Not too shabby for a kid who didn’t go to college. At the end of the day, It is about the GAME…if you PLAY the game well..youll be fine.
What Bill Bennet said isnt about abortion…what Bill Bennett said is about the never-ending backlash against African americans. As much as it pains me to hear Louis Farrakhan discuss the planting of explosives at the Levees in NOLA, hearing things like this make me realize he doesn’t say those things in a vacuum.

  3. The Allen Guttmacher Institute has the legitimate info about abortion. Here is the link to their site that shows the rates of abortion from 1973, after Roe v. Wade, to today http://www.agi-usa.org/pubs/fb_induced_abortion.html
The abortion theory and the declining crime rate has been around for a while, but it ignores several other important factors, such as the state of the economy. What I find most interesting about conservatives is that they are supposedly anti-abortion, but if you read between the lines, it seems that they really mean that they don’t want middle class White women to have abortions.
On another note, Black women do have much higher rates of abortion than their White counterparts, but the connection to crime (which Bennett seems to be arguing for and against) implies some logical conclusions that we cannot make.

  4. The link to that particular Bennett story didn’t work for me. (Bomani: isn’t that the electronic equivalent of leaving your fly down? You Must be tired.) But I heard what Bennett said this morning on NPR and it made me not want to get out of bed – It is so depressing to hear that anyone with any power in this world thinks like that. It made me think for a second “Yep – Another reason not to bring kids into this crummy world.” But then I thought.. “wait a while.. HE’S the nigga who shouldn’t breed.”
That breeding line is the smartest thing I’ll read all day. And the link appeared to work for other people, sucka.
