Might As Well Tell Ya…

…well, this bit of information made it to TheBigLead today, so I may as well let it be known.
For the next year, don’t look for my work on sports anywhere but ESPN.com. Effective November 10th, I’m officially a contracted writer for ESPN.com. That’s not gigantic news, really, for signing me isn’t so much like that Matsuzaka guy I’ve been reading about. But, that’s what it is.
Okay, the “not gigantic news” part is kinda sorta bullshit. The earth will continue to spin, but it’s pretty cool from my end. Coming from a self-published “column” on a now-defunct site six years ago to where I am now is a helluva piece of upward mobility, the way I see it.
I started doing this because I needed something to keep me alive while going through the misery of grieving. Now, I can finally do this and earn a real living. And I can do this on an outlet I’ve read for years, one that’s been the homepage on my web browser since my freshman year of college. For me, this is like when those New York boys get to play for the Knicks. It’s what I’ve grown up reading, and now it’s where I write.
That’s kinda cool to me.
As is the first year of guaranteed steady paychecks of my life. Hooray adulthood!
Anyway, that’s that. I’ll still be doing music news for VIBE.com, and I still can do non-sports work for anyone.
Oh, and I’ll still be blogging. A lot more after the semester at Elon is over. With the paying gigs taking up my time, I haven’t been on here like I’d prefer to be. But I’ll be around more in about a month.
Promise.

  1. Congrats to you, sir. It will help having the one-stop-shop instead of having to search high and low from the 202393 sites that featured your pieces…
You deserve the promotion and I’m respectfully envious and proud of your come-up. Dare I say “inspiring” without being cheesy? Nope? Ah well. Congrats, tho.

  2. Anyone read that Jemele Hill debut column? Thoughts anyone?
I don’t think she’s worth 200K a year. What did she really say in her column? And who really wanted to know who she was?
I would have been less disappointed if she actually talked about an issue for longer than three sentences than just talk about herself. Cause no one was asking!

  3. Shot Clock,
What does that have to do with Bo’s good news?
Oh yeah, did we ask you if you or your family were rich? Did we ask you if you had a palacial condo? No, but you told us anyway. If you would like to discuss the column further, give me your email address and we can discuss. If not, please save this section for the people who want to congratulate Bo.
    Thanks in advance.

  4. I am thrilled for you.
Page two has gone through some odd changes even going back to the death of Wiley.
It seems to try to be all things to all people, and when you’re the world wide leader…I guess that is how it is supposed to be.
It appears clear though that “we” belong ON the field and not writing about it.
Even when it is about “us”, a fact I find VERY amusing.
Your upward rise has been a joy to behold….
    Go Gettem.

  5. A curious thought to follow up with the great news, where do we think Page2 is going with their style, look and feel?
I’m a bit curious and skeptical… considering P2 covers the more controversial and bold topics and not just headliners… and is stored away in the “2nd” page o’ the site.
But as I said before, on the optimistic side they scooped a good one with Bo.

  6. Bo, we’ll miss you at BSN. Thanks for inspiring me to reach higher and higher.
Didn’t know how to take you until I humbled myself. I thank you graciously for that. Props.
    Ya done good!
Jarrett, thanks for the flattering comment.
The far reaching effect of the late great Ralph Wiley. Thanks for cracking the door so at least one more can see the light Mr. Wiley.
Congratulations Bo! Do ya thing bruh! Do ya thing!

  7. I didn’t know Stephanie was the comment section Nazi. Damn.
Get a grip. And find some work.
Kirk, please figure out how you’re going to have enough money for retirement in a couple years. How old are you? 59?
Don’t forget, DC is nicer than Scottsdale.

  8. How about that? LONG overdue.
    Gametime is right.
Almost 15 years deep, and I never known a hobby writer with so much mouth. Or so much game. LOL. You talk a good one. Time to get some. It’ll be interesting to watch you graduate from hobbyist to professional. I know you think you have, but you haven’t. Now? Now you have. You no longer write: you’re a writer. Writers are born, not made. So we’ll see for sure now which breed you be. And I expect nothing but good things. Hot shit, all day. I hate sports, but I love you, Young Bleed. So I’ll be watching.
This would be a good time to pick up a youngster and bring them up in the game. All it takes is a push or an ‘ups’, and you know that better than most. Don’t forget, or karma will cash that check, homie.
I’m really excited for you, Bo. Get money. Get fame. Join the immortals.
    This is your shot.
    One.
