The Michael Vick Case, In One Sentence

Michael Vick’s going to do 23 months in prison because he hurt some dogs.
No matter your view, whether you find this to be justice or injustice, that sentence probably sums your feelings entirely.

  1. Maybe it’s just me, maybe I’m crazy, but it’s apparent that brothers haven’t figured out that just because they’ve “made it” that they still can’t do anything they want to…this is still Amerikkka and their skin is still black. I do not condone cruelty to animals, however, I can assure you if this had been a non-black athlete, then it would have been a non-issue, or community service and a public service ad at worst.

  2. ^
I know that a white guy has NEVER been sentenced to federal prison when they commit FEDERAL crimes sush as gambling, racketeering and violating the terms of his plea agreement.
But yeah – it was because he was black.

  3. It kinda does sum it up, but remember. Hurting dogs isn’t something you just sorta fall into. You have to find the right location, build the buildings, get the dogs, breed them, train them, fight them and shoot them. Through all that time a man, a real man, black or white, has to realize that what he’s doing is illegal. We can pontificate whether or not the crime fits the punishment or if he’d get less if he were white, and you gotta remember that this is a federal case and it carried a max that is judged in years, not months, but the fact of the matter is that he should have avoided the situation altogether.
Agree with him or not on social issues, but Bill Cosby had a good point on Meet the Press: is the institution set up against blacks? Well yeah. Does doing Crack get you more jail time than Cocain? Well yeah. SO DON’T DO CRACK! Don’t do either! The system is set up poorly, so avoid it altogether by making SMARTER decisions about what you do and who you allow to influence you.
Vick made some piss poor decisions, and he knew the consequences, and now he has to pay for them. Thats what it really boils down to.
(Btw, Roger Cossack breaks down how the sentencing went, I’d check it out in the video section of ESPN, from the court transcripts it appears that Vick was waffling on him actually killing dogs all the way through the trial… Thats at least the judge’s reasoning for the sentence the link is here: )

  4. Here is what I’m mad at. I’m mad at the fact that many of these athletes and entertainers still try to “keep it real” by doing ‘hood shit all the time. Once you acquire all of those millions, the time for ‘hood shit is over. This is what you hire advisers for, to keep your ass from doing ‘hood shit. He has to realize that he’s no longer that “Michael Vick around the way”.
I don’t feel sorry for him. It wasn’t like he needed the money, so he just did it because he could. That leads me to believe that he found some kind of enjoyment in this cruelty to animals.
