{"id":605,"date":"2007-04-05T14:04:32","date_gmt":"2007-04-05T19:04:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bomanijones.com\/blog\/2007\/04\/05\/new-piece-music-and-duke\/"},"modified":"2022-01-18T14:47:08","modified_gmt":"2022-01-18T22:47:08","slug":"new-piece-music-and-duke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bomanijones.com\/?p=605","title":{"rendered":"New piece, music, and Duke"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Business&#8230;here&#8217;s a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/espn\/page2\/story?page=jones\/070405\" rel=\"noopener\">look back at Eddie Robinson<\/a> through the lens of the role HBCUs play.<br \/>\nTwo thoughts, totally unconnected to one another.<br \/>\n1.\u00a0 I honestly can&#8217;t think of a single time in &#8217;07 I&#8217;ve been excited about an album or more than intrigued buy a song on the radio.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve avoided jumping on the &#8220;music just ain&#8217;t what it used to be&#8221; bandwagon, but it&#8217;s getting hard to do.\u00a0 Music has been at the center of my life for a long time.\u00a0 Now, it&#8217;s not, and it&#8217;s kinda sad.<br \/>\n2.\u00a0 The Duke Basketball Report recently decided to say <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dukebasketballreport.com\/articles\/?p=22259\" rel=\"noopener\">a couple of things about me<\/a>, which is their right.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not keen on using this site to respond to what people have to say about me&#8211;I criticize for a living, so I&#8217;ve gotta take it&#8211;but I do take umbrage with what was written.\u00a0 To save you time, I&#8217;ll excerpt the part about me.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>ESPN also employs Bomani Jones, who could moonlight at the Nation Of Islam blog with statements like this:\u00a0 &#8220;without question, I&#8217;d say that Duke is a white supremacist institution.&#8221;In fairness to Jones, he goes on to say that every college is a white supremacist institution, including traditionally black colleges.\u00a0 Al Featherston <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dukebasketballreport.com\/articles\/?p=22115\" rel=\"noopener\">had some words for Jones as well<\/a> when Jones called Christian Laettner&#8217;s &#8220;stomp&#8221; &#8220;one of the most vile things ever done on a basketball court,&#8221; terming it&#8221; unforgivable.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>First, it&#8217;s worth noting that I watched a bit of the Selection show with Al Featherston, and this never came up.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t hold that against him.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a chance he hadn&#8217;t read the piece by then.\u00a0 Further&#8211;and even more likely&#8211;he had no idea who the hell I am.\u00a0 For that, I don&#8217;t knock him.\u00a0 I&#8217;m pretty anonymous and don&#8217;t complain about it.<br \/>\nAs for my statement that Duke is a &#8220;white supremacist&#8221; institution, I said that on this site a year ago today.\u00a0 You can find the post <span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bomanijones.com\/blog\/2006\/04\/06\/\">here<\/span>.<br \/>\nThat line was taken as a statement of my Duke bias and place as a radical rabblerousing Negro.\u00a0 Pretty funny stuff to me.\u00a0 For one, I always laugh at how people limit the definition of white supremacy to include terroristic acts instead of looking at it as a mindstate.\u00a0 Guess I shouldn&#8217;t expect people to look at it on that level.<br \/>\nI can, however, expect people to responsibly extract quotes if that&#8217;s the route they&#8217;re going to take.\u00a0 This is what I said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Without question, I\u2019d say that Duke is a white supremacist institution. It\u2019s hard to imagine such a concentration of rich white people\u2013or rich any people, really\u2013without there being a palpable air of white supremacy. But Duke shouldn\u2019t feel too singled out. I feel the same way about the University of North Carolina, a school that I attended and that also has slave owners and Klan supporters\u2019 names on different buildings on campus. And I\u2019d say that many black colleges suffer from white supremacy, with their curricula frequently more about teaching black people how to do things instead of cultivating their students\u2019 ability to think and create new scholarship.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>White supremacy is everywhere, folks, lurking deeper than most people are willing to look. It\u2019s in white people, it\u2019s in black people, it\u2019s in everybody. It\u2019s so insidious and it is an unavoidable characteristic of American life.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And Duke is not immune.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Not quite me pickin&#8217; on poor ol&#8217; Duke, now is it?<br \/>\nAs it relates to basketball, I&#8217;ve been pretty open about the fact that I don&#8217;t like Duke.\u00a0 It&#8217;s fun stuff, really.\u00a0 That&#8217;s what sports are, the way I see it&#8211;fun stuff.\u00a0 That said, I think I&#8217;ve always been pretty fair to the team and its players.\u00a0 You can read what I have to say about the team and see that I don&#8217;t bag on them when it&#8217;s not warranted.\u00a0 I give them props when they&#8217;re earned.\u00a0 I treat them no differently than I treat Carolina or any other school.\u00a0 I think my archive page backs up that assertion.<br \/>\nSo let&#8217;s be real about things, shall we?<br \/>\nOh, and I sure as hell think Christian Laettner putting his foot on someone was unforgivable.\u00a0 If you grew up in my house, you would feel the same way.\u00a0 To me, that&#8217;s about as disrespectful as spitting on someone, and I think that&#8217;s unforgivable.\u00a0 There is no circumstance where putting your foot on someone prone is cool.\u00a0 It is foul as all get out.\u00a0 I dont&#8217; care if Timberlake got up clapping or not.<br \/>\nThat ain&#8217;t bias.\u00a0 Let Dean Smith or anybody else come up to me and put his foot on me.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll see just how vile I think it is.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Business&#8230;here&#8217;s a look back at Eddie Robinson through the lens of the role HBCUs play.
