This Shirley Liquor Character

I generally don’t get behind boycotts and the likes, but check out this post Jasmyn Cannick has on that Shirley Q. Liquor character.
Here’s my thing with Liquor–he/she/whatever just isn’t funny.  And I’m not trying to say that my definition of what’s funny or what’s decnt should apply to others.  I can readily acknowledge when things that offend my sensibilities are funny.  This ain’t it.  I’m saying that I see no way on Earth this act can be funny unless you just think things in blackface are funny.
And that’s not cool.
So check this out and do with it what you will.  ‘Tis my public service announcement of the day.

The worst part of this isn’t that the character Shirley Q. Liquor has been created. The worst part is that people think it’s funny. That it’s sanctioned by a larger group makes it impossible to view as an isolated incident.
Provocative question asked by a friend: Are we right to expect a degree of solidarity and understanding from the gay/lesbian community when homophobia is so widely practiced and accepted within our own?

Shid….you tell me a case of a member of the gay/lesbian community getting pulled over by the fuzz for no apparent reason.
There were no laws saying that it was illegal for more than two gay folk to be in assembly.
I expect total understanding from the gay/lesbian community, since that community wants to equate its struggle for equal rights to that of the Civil Rights movement. They don’t want us to say “faggot” and other slurs..I don’t want them to party around in blackface, dig.

True, no laws barring gay assembly outside of the home. But there are definitely “anti-sodomy” laws still on the books in a number of states. And the laws forbidding black people to marry one another were repealed long ago.
In any case, not trying to compare struggles. Exercise in futility.
My friend was saying, and I have to agree, that we have little right to expect tolerance from a group of people toward whom we’ve been decidedly intolerant.

I’m still trying to figure out what this has to do with hazing.

Uh, yeah. White people “acting black” is generally not so funny. Mos def in this case when BLACKFACE is involved. Blackface! How is that funny?

Shirley Q is incredibly unfunny. A radio station played a bit a week or so ago and the dj’s were giddy talking about how funny she/he/it is. The clip was so bad I no longer believe anything those dj’s say.
Getting those shows cancelled was a service to mankind.

Blackface is responsible for ruining the Ted Danson/Whoopi Goldberg facade/relationship (y’all know Whoopi is an asexual mule). I no longer believe in love.

I love when old white people say “y’all.” It puts a smile on my face.

I love it when people spell “y’all” correctly and not “ya’ll.”
