I liked the new piece.
From the beginning of the whole BALCO issue I’ve always felt like the public notion of the story was that the entire company was represented by Barry Bonds. In reality, the company represents several more clients in addition to Barry Bonds, and those clients are all competing at the highest levels as well. I always thought to myself, “why does Barry Bonds always get singled out?”
I agree with you. I believe that Barry Bonds’ story has been linked to steroids almost exclusively, without any attention given to Olympic athletes and the other that have made sporting history is some fashion or another.
This is just another reason why popular media interferes with the sports-world too often. The issue is pretty cut and dry: BALCO supplied illegal performance enhancers to several world-class athletes. All of them should be under the same scrutiny. Just because Bonds is chasing a record doesn’t mean he should be singled-out, in my opinion at least.
I think the media and sources like ESPN need to be more careful with how they present their news and who they end up singling-out. It’s not fair to have a nightly show about the Barry Bonds debacle but then continue to run Marion Jones Nike advertisements in between sets.
Fair is fair. All the cheaters should be under the same microscope.
