Entertaining piece, and agree with your overall sentiment. But you overreached in using Cal from last year as an example. If you can, check out a play-by-play trascript of that game, particuarly the last few plays of Cal in USM territory but taking a knee, and see if you still think “barely beat” and “squeaked by” are still appropriate terms. Have you ever used those words to describe an 8-point victory before?
Cal got punished for not frantically running up the score in a game that not enough people saw.

So, by that logic, if Southern Miss was playing the Quincy Hawks and only won by 8, that would be a blowout or comfortable victory?
USC, Texas, LSU, and a lot of other teams woulda sent a lesser team home with a 40 point ass whoopin’. The only time it would have been as close as 8 points was halfway through the first quarter. THAT is why Cal got leapfrogged.

If all 3 go undefeated (big if for VT), here are the big victories.
USC – UCLA (8), Notre Dame (9), Oregon (14) Cal (24), no championship
Texas – Ohio State (12), Texas Tech (17), joke championship
VT – Miami (6), Boston College (13), West Virginia (18), championship w/ FSU (10)
It certainly looks like VT has the hardest schedule that should equate to a higher rank.

Hey Jay. Last time I checked, USC also has to face Fresno State, currently ranked #22 in the AP. When they played Arizona State, ASU was also ranked in the top 15. No way on God’s green earth do the Hokies play a tougher scedule than USC.

Man, screw all these predictions…can somebody PLEASE explain to me WHY we still have BCS? Every year, their “computers” prove that it’s a flawed system. Why do we still let these jokers determine who we watch on New Year’s Day???

Your Page 2 piece also had one inaccuracy. In 1998, Tennessee played Mississippi State in the SEC Championship Game. We did play Arkansas that year, but it was earlier in the season.

I understand your Page 2 piece about how the Big 12 gets “let in” on championship games and agreed for the most part. However the reference to Nebraska going in 2001 is invalid. The BCS didn’t have any problems that year it was just the fact that teams kept losing at the end of the season. After the Colorado game nobody in Nebraska expected to get to the title game because four teams had to lose for us to get there. Four teams did end up losing (Oklahoma to Oklahoma State, Florida to Tennessee, Texas to Colorado, and Tennessee to LSU – all within a two week span). After these losses guess who was next? Nebraska. So for that year you can’t make the claim that the BCS favored one conference over the other because unforeseen events caused us to get back into that Championship game.

It is a system that was created purely to generate revenue…just like Valentine’s Day.
Someone needs to have the balls to put a playoff system in place for D-I football.
