The Wire–Episode 56

So glad this made some sense of Episode Five. So, so glad. I’m still left thinking that there’s a whole lot that’s gotta be resolved by the end of the city. No idea how they’ll do it.
1. Was that Nick Sobotka? If so, isn’t he supposed to be in witness protection? I don’t understand. There’s no way The Greek ‘nem can be back and in the same place, and Nick Sobotka’s just hangin’ around, heckling politicians with Little Big Roy and the black dude with the bald head (can’t remember his name)? Don’t seem possible. Speaking of which…
2. David Simon redeemed himself. At least Omar’s in real bad shape. I’m still not exactly sure how he pulled this off without his clothes being dirty, but thems the breaks. More important than anything is that he’s not shaking this off like a superhero. He’s not a superhero. He just robs people.
3. Marlo’s not too happy with Chris. But dude, the fool jumped out a 4th floor window! What else do you want?
4. Oh, I know what you want. Everything. Marlo just gangstered the co-op. He’s running it. He’s jacking up the price. And ain’t nobody say nothin’. Maybe I’ve been assuming that drug dealers are harder than they are, cuz them old timers is layin’ down like some punks. That said, they did see two of their brethren perish at the hands of that sociopath. A sociopath, I might add, that isn’t as smart as we thought. Why do I say that?
5. Because he’s actually giving Cheese responsibility! Fool, hasn’t this moron proven that he can’t be trusted? Marlo. This nigga. His kind. They got to fall. They got to. I keep seeing so many ways this could happen, but Marlo’s always a half-step ahead. Cheese, however, could bring down the sharpest man.
6. Kinda liked what they did with Templeton. It was good to see he’s not just totally corrupt. Got a good one from that Marine. Of course, it seems he’s run game on another.
7. Does Sydnor have the stomach for this plan? I just don’t see it. But he’s down for Lester. Either way, Simon said months ago that Sydnor would be the only person on the whole show that didn’t wind up in disgrace. Wonder how that can happen given that he’s now on the illegal wiretap.
8. Randy. Damn. Just damn.
9. See, told y’all. I told people for a while that we’re going to find out that Joe had an insight man in the department or at the courthouse. It was practically given away, but it was also forgotten in the shuffles of Seasons Three and Four. Still, I wonder where that goes.
10. Carcetti sucks. That’s all.
11. Oooh, Bunk done pulled the right file. Soon as they can run that trace evidence, Chris goes down for beating that dude down. Knew that would get him.
12. I hope everyone knows what et al means. That’s all.
13. Give this to Jimmy and Lester. They don’t give up easy. Clever gentlemen they are.
14. There’s something hysterical about Fat Face Rick owning a bail bond service. Also, Omar ran up on Rick kinda fast. Hmmmm. Either way, Rick has such a “I’m too old for this shit” vibe. It’s really funny.
15. Clever, clever Greeks. Picture messages. Great move. I’m not quite sure how this works, but OK. They get a call, then they look for a picture. Can you do both at once?
16. Chris anxiety’s fascinating. He’s, like, a family man. I just don’t understand.
17. Hey, where’d Omar get that coat from? Omar left his coat in the janitor’s closet. He turns up on the corner–when he set that car on fire–in a trench coat and a do-rag. Am I nitpicking?

  1. I’ve noticed that with each of these Episode reviews, you never cover the parts of the episode that relate to the newsroom. As a reporter, do you feel they do an accurate portrayal of the news, or do you just not find the newspaper scenes that interesting?

  2. How do you see this ending for Omar? There’s a lot of talk over the internet about Kenard blowing O’s brains out in a store. I don’t see it but you never know. Penny for your thoughts.

  3. Found this on a Wire blog. Answers your questions Bomani.
For those wondering why Nick — last seen entering Witness Protection after taking his uncle’s deal to testify against Vondas and The Greek — is back hanging with his port buddies, I asked David Simon, who said that Nick, like lots of people who go into Witness Protection, eventually left the program because he missed his old life and family. (And since Vondas and The Greek were never caught or brought to trial, I doubt the feds kicked up much fuss at saving that expense.)

  4. Yes, sir you are nitpicking. That said, stuff like that makes me nuts.Omar is running on pure emotion right now, which I don’t think bodes well for him. Chris’ anger/frustration, plus missing his family, make for a real volatile mix. It’s going to be interesting to see how it all goes.

  5. Yo bomani man,
pickin up where I left off yesterday afternoon.
See my entry on episode #54 about the coop, then go back and watch #51 again. Marlo deals with everybody the same way. He’s street smart for sure. He’ll play the role all the while looking for the angle where he can own it all. He’d cut the Greeks throat if he could get further up the supply chain. Know this maaaaaaaaaannn!!!!
I’m curious as to what Grigg’s role will be. So far everybody else’s role has been positioned.
Nick’s return is reasonable given that approach Matt. But people just don’t show up on this show and do nothing. Something is definitely afoot.
I can’t believe the newsroom is swallowing this hogwash. Wait did I just say that???????
Bunk was wrong for going at Randy like that knowing full well that it was Herc’s ignant azz that put him in this situation in the first place. Now Randy has developed that hard exterior to cope with his surroundings. Which IMHO is an excellent real life adaptation of how a potentially good kid gets channeled down the wrong road through no fault of his own.
Like I said Marlo is a little more concerned about Omar than he is letting on. I think he knows Omar can get to him. You heard what Chris said to Snoop in that vacant about why he couldn’t go home “Same way we found out about the blind man”.
I’m surprised no one has commented on Omar calling out Marlo in the streets. Now Marlo just cleaned out a whole house because some mid-level hustla had allegedly said “Marlo was a c*cksucka”. Now you have a well known gay thug callin Marlo a “B*tch” and that “he’s scared to meet Omar in the streets” to his people. He wants Marlo to get angry, make it personal, and do something foolish. Awwww shiggedy.
Line of the night for me came from Omar:
“And tell Marlo I burned the money. This was neva about no paper”.

  6. Just wanted to say, I’m a first timmer to your forum and I luv all the thoughtful insights about the Wire.
I too am worried about Omar, and his current strategy. Marlo has got layers of protecton through his soldiers and I just don’t see Omar running up on Marlo like that but hey weirder things have happened.
Also, very important in this is that Marlo and the Co-op no longer have Prop Joe’s inside man to serve as a warning. And now Daniels and his chick are on it.
Alot of past dealing and aspects are all coming together to form what?, I don’t know but it definately will be interesting in the end.
Also, Marlo has gained alot of knowledge and I don’t see him slippin’ with the wire-tap situation that easily, so that aspect of Lester/McNulty is pointless to me. Like I said before, it’ll be Bunk that maybe is the catalyst.
I’m interested to see if Bunk can really bring the case against Chris/Michael and if this may be the undoing of Marlo and his crew.

  7. Did anyone take notice of the security camera mounted outside of Monk’s apartment? The day after Omar’s leap of faith, the cinematographer’s camera pans to Monk’s apartment building and you see the security cam mounted to the building. This may come into play by the end of the season to help bring Marlo down.

  8. Nikki, I saw the camera but I’m not sure how it will play. Marlo wasn’t there so his crew would take the hit if need be.
“come at the king, best not miss” Omar

  9. Answer for question #17.
The scene only showed him limping a short distance out front. So, I’m thinking he was testing his ability to walk before he actually left. Once he knows he walk/limp he goes back inside for the trench coat & do rag.
    Just my observation.

  10. Yo G, you’re wrong about Marlo ‘giving responsibility to Cheese’. Marlo surrounds himself with two types of people.
    1) Wannabes, and
    2) People who don’t want his job.
Cheese fits into the former but he’s not clever enough. He’s a wannabe of the mark variety and Marlo is just keeping his dumb ass closeby. I predict that his blood will flow before episode 9 is over. Has to.

I’m loving Omar’s mindgame on Marlo. The whole “Marlo is a bitch” play is sure to strike at the same nerve that sent Marlo into conniptions behind the “Marlo is a dick sucker” comment early on this season.
Yeah… Marlo’s about to be exposed as a punk or turned into Omar’s pin cushion (take those however you like. :))

    Clay Davis… Gangsta!
But why did the newsman say that Clay Davis walking made him feel “white”? What… only Black folks get away with slick shit in America. If so, where can I get my slice of the slick shit pie?

I want to see Alma naked. I’m not sure why. But I do.

Just a few more episodes to bring Mouzone back. Don’t fuck it up, Simon. Don’t-Fuck-It-Up.

  11. Adisa I’m with you. pllllleeeeez bring mouzone back. if i remember correctly, he and omar grew a special bond last time he was in town, maybe he can be called upon to deal with omar’s current vendetta.
as for cheese, (btw i luv that meth earned this role, dude is a solid actor) marlo is def usin this dude. adisa is right here as well. as a strong minded, to the top business man would think, cheese’s ambition and cockiness may not have lasting power, but it does prove useful.
and i don’t buy it for a moment that marlo was trying to promote slim. he knew slim was a soldier to the end and knew he’d turn it down. he knew he had his eye on cheese the whole time, he just did that for social sake, so that the co-op wouldnt know cheese gave up prop joe. otherwise everyone would just come at cheese and marlo isnt done using him yet. such a smart move. if u watch, i think maybe two co-op meetings back, while joe was still with us, u can catch marlo scouting cheese. he notices cheeses anger and u can see him make the decision to take him right then and there.
im thinking chris’s family maybe his fall. it shows his weakness. i dont know how omar would find them, since chris is taking such precaution to not go home, but when u live like chris does, u can’t have that weakness. which is exactly why michael is vulnerable. as we see, his mom is def his down fall, she already turned bunk on him. wow i hate her, she really gets to me. she’s the new ziggy in my eyes. if i saw that kid i’d have to choke him. that’s how good these actors are. … ok i’m too into this now i’m gonna stop. haha
