What if…

…Google went down for a full week. I don’t think anything like this has happened. I figure as much because I don’t recall ever being committed to an asylum, which is exactly what I think would happen if we lost what my brother and sister-in-law call “The Brain.”
I can imagine it, though. All over the world you’d be hearing, “I told you, I don’t know. Now either step up or step off, fool.”
Losing Google would be like Y2K and the apocalypse coming within ten minutes.

  1. I don’t know what I’d do without Google and Google maps. I live and breath it. I also like the Merriam-Webster dictionary online.
Recently, the internet in the Middle East and parts of Asia was down for about a week and that part of the world was totally crippled. I think the problem was an underwater cable that had been damaged.

  2. Aside from Google, my other most used referernce is… (drum roll)…
    Wikipedia.
Yeah, I know it’s user input driven, but they do keep fairly close tabs on the records and try to keep them legit. Where information is questionable, they list it as needing a citation.

  3. Speaking of google and other search engines, China is apparently stepping it up with the firewalls with regards to Tibet. (Nothing new of course.) Sad, so sad.

  4. The only thing Wikipedia is good for is settling arguments over whether Charles Nelson Reilly was ever on M*A*S*H. Google is good for when you want to find Chuck, get his home address, an dig up his criminal records. Totally different story. Life without Google may be unliveable.
And yes, I typed the stars between the letters of M*A*S*H.

  5. if google shut down, most would go back to using yahoo. I don’t use google for everything, but I could see how it would affect people who use it for a variety of purposes.
