A Really Strange Epiphany Regarding Prince

Okay, people that know me are very well aware of what a big Prince fan I am, so they listen some of the things I say about him without thinking I’m weird.  I hope that the rest of you will follow suit.
So me and a few of my buddies just watched Prince’s performance from the Super Bowl again.  While watching it, one dude said…
“85% of the women at the place wanted to give Prince some.  And 30% of the women there were lesbians.
And that’s probably true.  But here’s what I realized–Prince is the only cat out there that dudes will willingly admit could pull their girls right from under them, but discuss the with the ultimate respect.
Really, think about it.  Most dudes I know, whether they like Prince or not, understand that’s just how the game goes, for the most part.  My girlfriend already told me that, “even when he’s 80 years old, Prince’ll be the sexiest thing in a rocking chair.”  I sure as hell hope that I’ll still be the sexiest thing on two legs to her, shit.
But is there any other dude that men will talk about like that?  I know this is a really bizarre thing I’m asking you to consider, but I think this is kinda interesting.

Hmmm… Considered it per your request. But, I still don’t get what people see in him in terms of being sexy.
But, as for his performance, he rocked it! That was probably the best half-time show I’ve seen. I watched it twice. Slaying guitar work, especially in the rain. I do got some “man-love” for him though…
OK Kirk, go ahead and post your knock on…

Oh, as for commercials, pretty lame this year I thought. Although, I did like the FedEx “name” commercial with Joel, Harry, Eileen, Joy, Bob and Mr. Turkey-neck.

Okay, I really have to disagree, or maybe I’m in that 15% (I need a brother that is solidly built). All me and mine could talk about for the first ten minutes was how Prince wasn’t get his hair wet for no one and came out in a doo rag. I know there are too many sistas out there that go to bed looking just like he did yesterday. Also, the dayglow outfit really wasn’t doing anything for me. Personally, I found his performance in general to be too tame. I understand that he was under contract to behave, but the performance didn’t live up to the hype in my opinion.

Definitely agree. I watched in a room with 3 other women and about 10 men. When one of the girls said Prince was sexy, we actually had this same discussion.
All eventually agreed that even with high heels and relaxed hair, Prince exudes sex, and everyone – male or female – has to just respect that. Did you see the symbolism with the guitar and the silhouette? There were practically pheremones beaming out of the television.
I can’t think of anyone else who can draw that kind of reaction…Maybe AI? Girls love him, guys respect him.

Except that only a small subset of nonblack women have a thing for Iverson. Prince-love crosses racial boundaries, though younger women don’t love him like that.
I’d really never thought of this, but I think you’re right. Prince is the only one for people about 25 to 55–every other candidate has an appeal that’s not broad enough.

My wife does not think Prince is sexy, but she thinks he is attractive. I have learned from my wife that being attractive often has little to do with looks (she thinks Obama is attractive too).
She said Prince’s confidence and rejection of the status quo and social norms makes him attractive, because many women want a man who doesn’t give a F about what everybody else says … but wouldn’t that make Osama sexy too?

And to answer your question, my wife said Common can’t take her from me, but he would make her think about it. My wife is really attracted to guys who reject conformity as much as possible.

I hope you meant Obama, not Osama.
Let me toss out at name: Denzel Washington.
In case you wanted to see it again:

I agree with that. Funny though, I was talking to a 24 year old and she said that she didn’t think Prince was sexy. I looked at her with astonishment. The first thing I asked was whether she remembered Purple Rain, she said no. I just laughed–I knew she wouldn’t get it then.
It’s weird how if you graduated from high school in 97, you were definitely the end of an era, the last of the gen x-ers. I guess she doesn’t get the beginning of the “sexy thug” thing by Tupac either.
Prince will be the sexiest thing with an artificial hip and dare I say it I have visions of people laying on top of his grave like they do Jim Morrison (maybe not Black people but . . .)

    Good point about AI…
And I would have agreed with ETS’ wife, maybe…but then I saw the commercials. Veto on Common. No way I’d run out on my man for Peace, Love and Gap…

This makes me think the issue is not about looks or any sort of sex appeal, it’s that respect. Usually gained by excess of talent and skill, but could also be how you carry yourself. They just have to be in your personal “Pantheon of Great Men.” You’re willign to let Prince slide because you’re in awe of his talent, almost on some, “well girl, you’re with a better man than me, good for you.” In my Negro Bowl series I suggested if Tony Dungy started womanizing brothers might be cool with it, cause it’s Tony Dungy, how can you beef with Tony Dungy?
One odd choice that comes to mind is Stevie Wonder. Now, it’s all love, but just looking at him Stevie might be as sexy as a rock, but if he came through and was like, “I’m taking your girl too,” I’d be shocked, but I’d also probably let it slide. I might even watch him tear my girl up in person, as long as Songs in the Key of Life was playing throughout.
I don’t think anyone ambivalent about Prince’s talent would let him scoop their girl …

how many shades of grey are there between “sexy” and “attractive”? saying someone is “attractive” is what you say when you don’t want to piss off your significant other…

True Framdog, but purple is not any shade of white, black, or grey. I fail to see how “attractive” can include an effeminate little elf-man dancing around in one of David Alan Grier’s “Men on…” wardrobes.

    Kirk,
Women used to go wild for Elton John, Little Richard, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, etc.
Justin Timberlake seems to be the mainstream “it” guy of the moment.
Basically, it’s the norm for modern male sex symbols to be effeminate.

I disagree. I think females are attractive that I don’t think are sexy. And if I think a woman is sexy, I’ll tell my wife. She knows how I feel about Beyonce. And she has no problem with telling me a guy is sexy, but only if I ask …. which is never. LOL.

Not even trying to be on the (no homo) tip — but I know women still, to this day, who are my age still have a thing for Sean Connery and Billy Dee Williams. There’s something to say about someone being ultimately cool 24/7.
Even if you like to smack a hoe around or two (Sean Connery)…

I’m not surprised chicks dig Billy Dee. A lifetime supply of Colt 45 has gotta be mighty endearing.

Nothing like a little Colt 45 to get the mood right……..that and a little “hey hey” : )

Billy Dee is seriously played out, but Sean Connery got the 24/7 cool. So does Prince. And that’s sexy.
