BET…Huh?

Business…to me, Tiger Woods is Jimi Hendrix.
Two things have disturbed me in the last 24 hours.  Today, my buddy Ernesto and I have been talking about the new Redman record.  I’m giving it the first run through, and I like it.  He loves it, as does my brother.  Anyway, his AIM away message says that people need to check out Red Gone Wild.   The response he got from a few people?
“Who still listens to Redman?”
Oy.  A little part of me died.  Reggie’s one of my five favorite rappers ever.  Out of his mind, creative even when he’s repetitive, and unquestionably an all-time great.  Gracious, he’s been doing this for 16 years now and still bangs hard.  His delivery is unmistakable, and his flow is always on point.  I preferred back in the day when he flipped a zillion styles, but I still love what he brings.
But now, folks are talking about Reggie like he’s Johnny Mathis.  That hurt.
But not as much as BET’s countdown of the greatest dancers of all-time.  I watched that with my girlfriend, who’s a dancer.  She must have watched that like I check things on writers.  The difference, of course, is writers evaluate writers, so the opinions offered are pretty much on point.  I may not agree, but I can see where they’re coming from.
However, I can’t see how in the world Puffy is the 24th greatest dancer of all-time.  Even the absurdly ranked 25, Ciara, should have been offended.
When Usher hit the screen as something like 11, my girlfriend hit the floor.  Literally.  Off the couch and on the floor.  And she’s fighting some illness.
But nothing, and I mean nothing, could have prepared us to see Chris Brown at 4.  That put him higher than Alvin Ailey.  Alvin Ailey’s pretty good, if you didn’t know.
I actually like Chris Brown.  I doubt I’ll buy any of his albums for a few years, but he’s talented as all get out.  I respect his hustle.
However, if he’s the 4th best dancer ever, I’m the 4th best writer ever.  You had to be kidding me.
I don’t know much of a lick about dancing.  I admit that.  But I know better than that.
It was a strange countdown because there were only like three dancers doing commentary.  Seriously, Godfrey, the dude that succeeded Orlando Jones as the 7Up guy, knew more about dancing than most of the people doing commentary.  He’s a friggin’ comedian, man.  And it’s not like he’s a comedian/dance critic.  He’s just funny.
Oy.
I recognize that there was supposed to be great emphasis on music performers because those are the people that hook the audience.  I get that.  But are you serious?  Omarion was so high on that list that I wondered why he’s not already in somebody’s hall of fame.  Absurd stuff, man.  I was just happy my girlfriend got off the carpet within five minutes.  For a second, I was worried that she’d passed out.  Nope.  She was just blown away.
And I was, too.

    I totally cosign with LadyB.
They are more concerned with name recognition than truth.
Chris Brown higher than Alvin Ailey…are you kidding me.
BET hasn’t been on my playlist in a while anyway.

If Ciara’s 25, where’s Keanu Reeves? The only dancing I’ve ever seen out of her is stuff Neo already did in a trench coat.
Keanu Reeves … Best Dancer Alive.

Quick aside, Godfrey is the funniest standup I’ve seen in person. Caught him at the Improv a couple years back. Dude opens a joke with “Fuck missing kids,” that brought the house down here in Orlando.
BET has no need to be objective or even accurate in their list. Every one of these countdown clip shows is worse than the one before it, none seemingly improving on their genesis, Pop Up Video.
No question, Puffy should be #1 on the Worst Rapper and Dancer charts all time. The Puffy dance itself looks like a one legged man losing balance on a crutch.

I’m a loyal reader of your blog and I must say I’m surprised you didn’t make mention of the death of legendary Grambling State coach Eddie Robinson.

BET has become a parody of itself. I gave up on them like 2 years ago.
The only thing I try to catch is the freestyles on the Basement.(do they even do that any more?) Shoulda never ditched Big Tigger, AJ, & Free.
“It’s ya boy, Big Tig! Doin’ big things!”
    I miss that shit.

It’s necessary to add the fact, that the person hating on Reggie, is a few cards short of a full deck. She also said that BIG is whack, and listed Rick Ross as one of the best rappers out.
They really do say the darndest things.

    BET sucks.
Puffy is the man. Chris Brown is the future. Omarion is underrated. And Usher needs to date a decent looking female.

best dancer is a difficult thing to rank. However, even with that said, how could MJ not be #1?

    1. I feel you on the Redman thing. SO underappreciated.
    2. Re the dancing countdown, read your title again. You were watching BET, not Discovery or A&E…what’d you expect?
    3. TI..again…what’d you expect? Dude has 2 albums or 3 right? And speaking as a corporate b-girl, a dude who has all the height of a coffee table is NOT turning me on…I don’t care if he takes all his clothes off…

Corporate Bgirl got life fucked up. While T.I. only has 4 albums which were released nationally (I’m Serious, Trap Muzik, Urban Legend, and King) he has like 20 albums worth of songs that were released locally in Atlanta. Go check out In Da Streets (part one, two, and three) Then go pick up The Leak. Then go listen to the Dem Boyz remix or the new Justin Timberlake song and make an informed decision on an artist’s ability. As far as the size thing goes, I’m wit you. He says he’s 5’9” – on stilts maybe. He’s like six inches shorter than me and I’m only 5’6” Plus, he only weighs about 122 lbs. With his shirt off, he does look a little bit like an Ethiopian bobblehead doll. With that said that li’l nigga can rap with the best of them.

I saw Omarion at this Nike party back in November. He was the only celebrity dancing with the regular folk outside VIP…cool folk. The highlight of the night was when these cats that thought they could dance challenged him to a battle. Omarion crushed their spirits so bad that I don’t think they danced the rest of the night. It was mean and funny. It was like watching Kobe play one on one against someone at the park who checked to ball to him by throwing it off his forehead. The punishment and humiliation was just too mean and not fair. The homies still laugh about it to this day.

Best dancers of all time. Or is this the best “black” dancers since 1985. C’mon, everything about this show and this network is bogus.
I’ve seen white males and females dance on the level of an Omarion or a Shakira but if I express my views, I’m immediately called a know-nothing sell-out. Funny how I’m selling out, but I’m not getting paid to express my opinion. Funny.
