I'll Be Watching Them…

as should you.
I can barely sit still thinking about a reunion tour from The Police.  Seriously.
They’re one of the bands I kinda feel bad for in terms of how they’re viewed historically.  Because they played from ’77-84, they don’t register as the best rock band of the ’70s or ’80s.  Any objective measure would give the ’70s to Led Zeppelin, and there’s a host in the running for the ’80s (I’m going with U2).  The Police is an unfortunate ‘tweener.
BTW, the only way you’ll see me profess love for The Police is when they’re capitalized, if you get my drift.

  1. On the other hand, the potential for disappointment is high. I hear Sting was never the same once Andy and Stewart weren’t around to haze him any more. All that brotherhood, all gone. So sad.
    I’d still probably go though.

  2. What a difference between The Police and Sting. Loved the former; was not a fan of the latter.
It’s all in Stuart and Andy. Andy’s early work on the first three albums made The Police. And of course Sting was quite the accompanying bassist.

  3. Considering that EVH has gone completely insane, his 15 yr old child is the new bassist, and Roth is 1,000 yrs old in Alcoholic Years, I can’t see putting down any more than, say, county fair money to go see them.

  4. I cannot wait to see The Police when they go back out on the road. When I heard the announcement on the news this morning, I started plotting ways to make sure I have ticket fare, cause you know they’re going to be a grip. BTW, my cousin played sax with them during the Synchronicity heyday.

  5. I just paid $165 each for U2 tickets, and my $55 Pearl Jam tickets were four times better… I hope The Police bring it too. Just cross your fingers Sting doesn’t sing too much solo stuff. “Fields of Gold” would be cool. That’s about it.
The Eagles reunion tour in ’95 was how to do a reunion tour. Hopefully they’ll measure up.

  6. On the reunion beat, I hope Rage Against The Machine is more than a one-off performance. I really like Audioslave, but Rage was just too good.

Kirk, I’d take your bet, but I seem to be out $165 already… Don’t get me wrong, U2 was a great concert, just not quite up to the ticket price. Plus, Pearl Jam showed up every act that performed here in 2006 by putting on a three-hour show (their set alone) for $55. That’s a band that LOVES to play and it shows!

  7. EVH’s son is supposed to be one of the better bass players of the past 15 years or so…..best band of the 80s was far and away Guns N Roses, although a case could be made for Metallica but thats it. Behind those 2, nobody comes close.

  8. 1. No concert is worth $165. For $165, I want to see Elvis, Hendrix, and all 4 original Beatles. To open: Mama Cass and the Ham Sandwich Orchestra. Even then, I’d have to think twice.
    2. I’d almost buy the G ‘n’ R argument if they had been around for a larger part of the decade. However, Dirty Harry movie appearance notwithstanding,…no.
    3. Even if Wolfgang is a great bass player, EVH is still a damned lunatic, and Roth is no better. $165 says Roth and EVH kill each other on stage while Alex sits there and stares ahead with the same expressionless look he’s had on his face since 1979.
    4. Seriously, am I the only one that heard Eddie cut part of his tonuge out and allegedly founded some underground lab to cure cancer? I’m not making this up.

  9. Yea, EVH was on Howard Stern and told him that he found the cure for cancer after cutting part of his tongue out. No doubt, the guy is insane. Still, if this reunion works happens, its gonna be huge….but probably not worth the ticket price.

  10. No, the problem is that they’re not intelligent-friendly. Let’s not forget who got the ball rolling on that whole middle-class-white-kid-with-a-che-guevara-t-shirt trend.
There is no horrible fate that could possibly wait for Zack De La Rocha that I wouldn’t wholeheartedly root for.
