Keep on talkin…

Business…the column this week is on why beats are better in hip hop than they’ve ever been. Enjoy.
Lots of new traffic after this Fryer post, and much love to George, Spence, and Cobb for helping with that. Soon as I get the blogroll up, you’re up there, along with anyone else that’s got heat I’m willing to co-sign on. Welcome to the newcomers. The site’s about reckless, informed entertainment and shameless self-promotion. However, I’ll never waste your time.
Oh, and here are a few things to look forward to…

First, the column will take on a new complexion starting in May. Can’t say much more than that right now, but it should be pretty interesting. Imagine BomaniJones.com with a budget. Not quite, but pretty similar. I’ll keep you posted, though.
Also, I’ll be adding a bio to the page pretty soon. It’ll be worth reading, so I’ll make it a post in and of itself and then have it archived for newcomers. Should be interesting.
And per the lead of HoneySoul, I’m going to do a radio blog entry here and there. So, instead of just putting up playlists, you’ll be able to listen to the tracks I mention. Many of them might offend your listening sensibilities, but that’ll make it easier for you to jam some of the weirdo shit that I mention with which you’re not familiar. Should be fun.
George and I are also probably going to talk about how to change the interface a bit to change things up a bit. George is the man for that. As Spence put it, “George will slit a nigga’s throat for you.” Always gotta have someone on the squad for you. And since he meant that figuratively, we get all that dedication without having to visit George on the weekends. All good, baby.
And while I’m thinking about it, the discourse about Fryer has been really interesting. I realize that it was outside the range of many non-academics, but I really put that up for those that aren’t in higher education. Every now and then, scholars are thrust into the popular realm, and they’re typically embraced by laypersons without being given much scrutiny. Many that don’t live this don’t consider themselves capable of really analyzing what cats with doctorates have to say, and that’s not necessarily true. Logic is logic is logic. The methods used to arrive at the logic may be hard to understand–even if you’ve got a few degrees in your pocket–but damn near anyone can tell if someone’s making sense. If you can’t, I need to take you on a date. You could be buying me shit.
But really, I would like if people felt better able to think about who these “public intellectuals” are. Really, how many people understand why Cornel West is famous? Why do you know Michael Eric Dyson’s name? What makes Skip Gates a big deal? No one is to be revered simply for being. Fryer’s interesting because he’s so young, meaning that we’ll be in the position to peep his game for a long time.
I ain’t got the answers to who or what he is, but I think I’ve got some good questions. You do, too. So ask them.
‘Til next time…
