Random Thoughts From Last Night

1. The Jamie Foxx Special wasn’t the heat.
And I still haven’t seen most of it, but what I saw wasn’t that heat rock. Wasn’t hot. Oh well.
2. UNC is not a tournament team.
Who ever thought we’d see Wes Miller starting at guard at a major Division I school? And who’d think he wouldn’t be the worst starter if that happened?
3. But Carolina might beat Duke.
Maybe those statements are contradictory–since a win over Duke would be a marquee win–but I think they can beat Duke. Why? Because Tyler Hansbrough is a grown man.
4. “Boat Trip” is the worst movie ever.
Yeah, I watched that trash on TBS. What goes through Cuba Gooding Jr.’s mind? Oh, why did I watch it? Because there were scores of beautiful women in that movie. And I couldn’t sleep. Sad thing is that today I can’t stay awake.
5. Jada Pinkett’s band suuuuuuucks.
Hey man, I watched them on Letterman doing that hard rock thing or whatever they’re doing. I asked Ronda Penrice while it was going on–when white people see stuff like that, is it the same as how I feel when I see a really bad white rapper?
6. This is the funniest thing ever.
It’s funny because kids are just cute, honest, and adorable. It’s hilarious because this is really a commercial for an insurance company. Provided by the lovely Ms. Robinson of Rocky Mount, NC.
7. I knew I wasn’t gonna wanna get up and do legs and abs in the morning.
And I haven’t. Gonna have to go during peak time. No good.
8. The Hawk has arrived in NC.
If you’re not familiar with the Hawk, listen to Lou Rawls’ “Dead-End Street.” And if you have it online, please send it to me.
I’m done.

  1. Re: # 5. Although Jada Pinkett’s band may suck (and I have suspected that for some time), let’s not forget that blacks are the originators and innovators of rock n’ roll. ie Chuck Berry and Little Richard. Bad rock is bad rock, and bad rap is bad rap, regardless of the color of the artist. (This coming from the son of an ex-Panther…go figure).
Sad but true–saying that rock is still black is like saying that African-Americans automatically have a connection to Africa. And that just ain’t the case. It is ours historically, but no longer ours in a proprietary sense.

  2. Hey Strong, good point… But I think Robert Johnson may have really started it all with his blues…
I was so stoked to have finally seen Little Richard at SXSW two years ago.

  3. love the lil kid…I swear, he is such a little adult lol.
Haven’t heard Wicked Wisdom….but yeah, pretty much everybody I’ve talked to who HAS…says-
“Man, that sucked.”….so I don’t think I’ll be going to see her this weekend lmao.
And I’m sure Cuba will just smile and cash those checks…the wheels really fell off that one-Boat Trip? Snow Dogs?…After Boyz N the Hood- who would have seen THOSE in his future…sigh.

  5. “An’ he was finna kick hiyim, while ‘e wa’ down on the groun’, an’ you know what ‘e diyid?”
It’s like watching a 4-year-old boy channeling a 65-year-old woman. Definitely in the running for funniest thing ever.

  7. I agree, the kid sounds like an old southern woman recounting some act of racism. As for the Heels, I think they can go a couple rounds in the tourney. It’s kind of odd but maybe everyone else is relatively weak as well? We just beat a strong Maryland team in College Park. Finally, back to an area of particular interest to me. Music. We (Niggers) were at the forefront of every development in rock music until neo-metal was mixed with classical music (nigger-kryptonite). Jimi Hendrix and the British invasion are inextricably tied to Black American Rhythm and Blues. Led Zeppelin which moved more towards metal used those funky jungle rhythms and was influenced by Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, and the whole array of groups conncted to King Crimson and Bill Bruford, Allan Holdsworth etc… Shoot Metal, Classical music, rock jazz, latin, etc… all cross paths in jazz-fusion. And some of that shit Stevie Wonder got from Herbie Hancock and snuck past all u non-musicians (re-listen to the chords in the chorus of “Too High”). Also a little known track called “Confusion/Contusion” (spelling is debatable based on diff. sources) off of Songs in the Key of Life (I think it’s #4). Whether or not the sound of such musics can be described as “black”, all of these artists are quick to acknowledge our influence, be it our jungle rhythms or approach to harmony, etc… I do my indignant musicians rant again. John McLaughlin invented heavy metal with blakc Billy Cobham leading the way with his ridiculous drum chops (listen to what he can do with the bass drum {thats the kick for u jungle music fans out there } on that old Mahavishnu). Ya’ll need to give fusion a chance and stop confusing it with smooth shit or noise.
