Good news…”The Departed” was nominated for an Oscar. Not like I get anything from that, but that might be the best movie I’ve seen in a theater. Seriously.
Anyway, I’m not so sure it’ll win Best Picture. I haven’t seen the other nominees. In fact, I haven’t heard of them. That makes me leery for “The Departed.” Them Oscar voters like to get cute.
All I’ll say is this–if Scorcese is again a loser for Best Director, I’m never watching the Oscars again. Not like I run to watch ’em now, but that’ll be a traveshamockery. Period.
You hear me, Academy?
Yeah, that’s what I thought.

Clint Eastwood will win in every category he’s nominated for, plus a few that he isn’t. And there’s not shit anyone can do about it. If you don’t like it, he’ll send Dirty Harry Jr. to your house, and no one wants that.

The Departed was wack. It was way too violent, unnecessarily vulgar in certain parts and the storytelling was not nuanced at all. I found the presentation of the parallel storylines to be totally ineffective, obvious and unimpressive. The style of the movie was totally derivative of Scorcese’s prior work and was a poor homage to Casino and Good Fellas. I found the thick accents distracting and not authentic. Boston is a large enough town to attract people from other regions so it wasn’t necessary to have everyone use the ridiculous accents. Just my thoughts…

How in the world does Borat not get a single nod? It can easily be said that Smith and DiCaprio turned in good performances which were not remarkable in any way, but a one-man tour de force sees no love. Maybe the Academy were just big fans of the Prince’s well-kept natural in Happyness, it was very James Evans without the cul-de-sac.

You should rent “Little Miss Sunshine.” One of the best comedies I’ve seen. What is so great about it is when they’re setting up the scene, you think, “Oh, I know what they’re gonna do, this is gonna be funny…” But they totally do something else and it’s even funnier! Plus, Alan Arkin ROCKED his part as the drugged out grandfather. Steve Carrell was surprisingly “reeled in,” butu still very effective in the roll.
Departed–Hell yeah, awesome movie too. Why was Marky Mark nominated though? He was good, but not an Oscar worthy performance.
Babel–I’ve been wanting to see this, but haven’t yet.
Borat–The Oscars are still a bit stuffy. Possibly one of the worst cases of overlooking a movie in their history. There was no other movie that made me squirm in my seat more and gave me tears down my face from crying laughing. The dinner scene? Oh my God. (Little Miss Sunshine was second in both categories).

I saw Little Miss Sunshine. I want my $10 back, and I think I only paid $7. It wasn’t bad necessarily, it just wasn’t very good. It was some indie film nerd’s tak on comedy, where there was an occasional funny scene on accident. Alan Arkin was funny, though.

Martin Scorcese is like the Erica Kane of the Academy Awards. Just like it took Susan Lucci forever to get an Emmy for playing Erica, looks like it’s taking a lifetime for Martin to get an Oscar.

I haven’t seen “Borat” “The Departed” “Pursuit” “Iwo Jima” or “Dreamgirls,” though I’ll likely rent the first two on DVD.
I saw “Little Miss Sunshine.” Cute, but vastly overrated. Quirkiness is supposed to fill in for an interesting plot or character development. Wes Anderson’s movies are the same way.
“LMS” was basically a paint-by-numbers Hollywood family flick with indie pretensions: “See how un-Hollywood we are? We mention Proust AND Nietzsche!” I prefer the movie it ripped off: “National Lampoon’s Vacation”

I have two without-a-doubt Oscar predictions.
First, Scorcese will win for The Departed. It’s too damn good not to and they’ll finally give it to him, purely based on the fact that it’s his last chance.
Second, Babel will win best picture.
Comedies do rarely get nominated, however, there was a recent comedy nominated – Sideways – great movie.

That’s actually a pretty good reason.
My decision to pick Babel is based on two fairly crappy reasons:
1. Because the movie uses subtitles, and
2. It seems to touch on sensitive issues yet it is just uncontroversial enough.
